My experience in Belize
I arrived to Belize by a bus from Guatemala. I was on a long term backpacking trip through Central America and Belize was a country that I knew the least about.

After crossing the boarder I was very surprised that compared to other Central American countries, the official language in Belize was English. They have a very thick Caribbean accent. They also speak another language but that one was not understandable at all.

After a 6 hour long trip that included bus and a boat ride, I landed on Caye Caulker island which became my home for the next week.

The first thing that I noticed on Caye Caulker was a “GO SLOW” sign and people taking it really easy.

The atmosphere on the island was very laid back and every time I tried to walk a bit faster, some of the locals would tell me to slow down.

I rented a small bungalow at Bella’s hostel, which is located at the east side of the island and the next thing I cared about was food.

Belizean cuisine is a combination of a Mexican/Central American cuisine Jamaican/Anglo-Caribbean cuisine. I found a relatively cheap restaurant which had a great grilled fresh fish with rice and a salat.

The travel and activity plan for Caye Caulker island was to chill on the island and attend a snorkeling tour.

Belize is famous for world class diving and snorkeling. This relatively small country has a rich variety of wildlife, because of its unique position between both North and South America. There are 5,000 species of plants, and hundreds of species of animals, including armadillos, snakes, and monkeys.

I believe that the most famous nature sight in Belize is the Belize Barrier Reef. This reef consists of series of coral reefs and is 300 kilometers long. The Belize Barrier Reef is a part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, which starts in Cancún/Mexico and continues down to Honduras.

My backpacker budget was limited for a popular helicopter cruise over the reef and the famous Blue lagoon, so I decided to go for a snorkeling tour instead.

I booked a one day snorkeling tour around Caye Caulker island. The tour included snorkeling at five different spots with a big chance of seeing lot of sea wild life and beautiful corals.

I’ve been on a snorkeling tour before but this one was absolutely the best, most beautiful and most adventurous one.

We cruised around all day (bring your sun screen!) and we stopped and snorkeled five times. I saw some amazingly beautiful and colorful corals and I snorkeled with turtles, sharks and a manatee! I had no idea what a manatee meant so when I saw this “sea cow” with my own eyes, I was very surprised 🙂

The rest of the days I spent in a very relaxing way. As crazy as it sounds, I was very tired of backpacking and moving from a place to place and doing tons of activities in other countries.

One of the activities that I did on Caye Caulker was a sunset yoga class. I appreciated the sunset views from a roof top where we did our practice. The teacher was well experienced so I couldn’t be happier.

I treated the stay on Caye Caulker as a mini retreat so I also tried to eat as much healthy as possible. I ate fresh fish every day or I ate and drank fresh coconuts. They were available everywhere. You could ask for an extra shot of a Caribbean rum and the fresh and healthy coconut turned in a famous drink called Coco loco.

My second favorite activity was riding around the island on a rented bike. Caye Caulker is a small island, but has several different parts. The east side is more crowded with houses and hostels/hotels but the west side is more quite and offers more peace.

My absolutely most favorite activity was swimming at the The Split. The Split is a narrow channel that goes from the east to the west side of the island. It’s a popular place to have a cocktails or to hang out with friends and it usually gets busy during the day. I used to swim there every day at 7am and I was the only one… Well, until the moment when this dog and his owner joined me and this photo was taken.
